Willem de Vos is the Most Entrepreneurial Scientist in the Netherlands in 2010

On 8 June 2010, Valorisation Day, the award for the 'Most Entrepreneurial Scientist' went to Willem de Vos. He was chosen from 14 candidates, nominated by the rectors and deans of all the Dutch universities. Praised for his noteworthy and innovative entrepreneurship as well as his considerable scientific reputation (he received the Spinoza Award in 2008), his nomination was based mainly on Microdish B.V., a company he founded. Gut bacteria and fat Recent research suggests that obesity is influenced by the combination of bacteria in the gut. Microbiologists in Wageningen and Amsterdam found that obese mice had more gut bacteria of a type that efficiently turns food into storable fats. Their findings have been published in Diabetologia. Willem de Vos and his co-researchers are now investigating the relation between gut bacteria and obesity in human beings.
